How to Change Oil in a Small Engine: Step-by-Step Guide

Changing your small engine oil is the single most important maintenance task. Here's how to do it right on any mower, generator, or pressure washer in 15 minutes.

Changing the oil in your small engine is the single most important thing you can do to extend its life. Old oil loses its lubricating ability, accumulates debris, and eventually causes scoring on the cylinder walls and bearing failure. The good news: it takes about 15 minutes and requires minimal tools.

Why Oil Changes Matter

Small engines run hotter and harder than automotive engines relative to their size. They don't have the same filtration systems, so contaminants build up quickly. Running dirty oil past the recommended interval is the #1 cause of premature engine failure I see in the shop.

Most manufacturers recommend changing the oil:

  • After the first 5 hours on a new engine (break-in oil change)
  • Every 25–50 hours of operation after that
  • At least once per season even if you don't hit the hour mark

What You'll Need

  • Correct oil for your engine (check the manual — typically SAE 30 or 10W-30)
  • A drain pan or container
  • Socket or wrench (for drain plug models)
  • Oil extraction pump (optional, for dipstick-tube models)
  • Shop rags
  • Funnel

Step 1: Run the Engine for 2–3 Minutes

Warm oil flows freely and suspends contaminants, so they drain out instead of settling in the engine. Don't run it long enough to get hot — just warm enough that the oil flows easily.

Step 2: Position the Engine and Locate the Drain

There are two drain configurations:

Drain plug models (most riding mowers and larger engines): Locate the drain plug — usually a square or hex bolt on the side or bottom of the crankcase. Position your drain pan underneath.

Dipstick-tube models (most push mowers, generators, pressure washers): These don't have a drain plug. You extract the oil through the dipstick tube using a siphon pump, or you tip the engine (spark plug up) to pour oil out the fill tube.

Step 3: Drain the Old Oil

For drain plug models: Remove the plug with the correct socket. Let the oil drain completely — tilt the engine slightly forward to get the last bit. Inspect the plug gasket; replace if worn.

For dipstick-tube models: Insert the siphon pump tube to the bottom of the crankcase and pump the oil into your container. If tipping the engine, remove the dipstick, place a pan beside the fill opening, and tilt slowly toward the fill tube. Never tip a 4-stroke engine with the carburetor down — fuel and oil will leak into the air filter.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

Clean the plug and the magnetic tip (if equipped). Reinstall with the gasket and tighten snug — do not over-tighten, as the aluminum crankcase threads can strip.

Step 5: Add New Oil

Check your manual for the capacity — most push mower engines take about 15–20 oz (roughly 0.5 quart), while riding mower engines take 1.5–2 quarts.

Add about 80% of the specified amount, wait 30 seconds, then check the dipstick. Add small amounts until the oil reaches the full line. Overfilling causes the engine to burn oil and can blow the head gasket.

Step 6: Check for Leaks and Run

Reinstall the dipstick, start the engine, and let it run for 1 minute. Shut it off and wait 30 seconds. Check the dipstick again — the level may drop slightly as oil fills the filter (if equipped) and passages. Top off if needed.

Check around the drain plug for leaks. Wipe up any spilled oil.

Disposing of Old Oil

Never pour used oil on the ground or down a drain. Pour it into a sealed container and take it to any auto parts store — most accept used oil for free recycling.

Common Mistakes

  • Using automotive oil in a small engine: Some automotive oils contain friction modifiers that can cause wet clutch failure in riding mowers. Use oil rated for small engines or check your manual.
  • Overfilling: This forces oil past the rings, causing blue smoke, carbon buildup, and potential hydro-lock.
  • Forgetting the break-in change: New engines have metal shavings from manufacturing. Skipping the 5-hour change circulates these through the bearings.
  • Tipping the wrong way: Always tip with the spark plug up and the carburetor up to prevent oil from flooding the intake.

The Bottom Line

Oil changes are cheap insurance. A quart of small engine oil costs under $10 and takes 15 minutes. A new engine costs $300–600. Change it on schedule and your equipment will outlast your neighbors'.
