Use a dedicated spark plug socket; these have a rubber insert to protect the ceramic portion of the plug.
Removing the Old Plug
Place the socket over the plug and turn it counter-clockwise. It might be stubborn if it hasn't been changed in years. If it feels stuck, do not force it. Apply a little bit of penetrating oil and let it sit for a few minutes. Once loose, pull it out carefully and inspect the end. A dry, tan-colored plug means your engine is running well. A black, oily, or wet plug tells me you might have deeper issues, like a dirty air filter or worn piston rings.
Installing the New Plug
Before putting the new one in, check the gap. Even if they are 'pre-gapped' from the factory, they can get knocked around during shipping. Use a feeler gauge to match the gap to your engine’s manual specifications. Start the new plug by hand—not with the wrench. If you use a wrench immediately, you run the risk of cross-threading, which is a very expensive mistake to fix. Once you feel it seat, use the wrench to tighten it about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. You want it snug, not overtightened.

If you crank that plug down like you are working on a truck engine, you will strip the hole. Another mistake is ignoring the spark plug wire. Pro Tip: Apply a tiny, microscopic amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new plug to ensure it comes out easily next year, but be careful not to get any on the electrode itself.
