Why Carburetors Get Clogged

Small engine carburetors have microscopic jets and passages that meter fuel and air. When fuel sits in the carburetor for weeks or months, the volatile compounds evaporate and leave behind a varnish-like residue. This varnish restricts fuel flow, causing the engine to run lean, surge, or not start at all.

Ethanol-blended fuel makes this worse. Ethanol attracts water, and the water/ethanol mixture separates from the gasoline (phase separation). This corrosive mixture eats carburetor components and accelerates varnish formation.

When to Clean vs. Replace

Clean the carburetor if:

  • The engine sat with fuel for 1–6 months
  • It starts but runs rough, surges, or dies at idle
  • It only runs with the choke partially closed

Replace the carburetor if:

  • The engine sat with fuel for over a year
  • Cleaning doesn't fix the problem
  • The carburetor body is corroded or the throttle shaft is loose
  • A replacement carburetor costs less than your time is worth (many are $20–40)

  • Socket set and screwdrivers

  • Compressed air (optional but helpful)
  • Clean work surface
  • Camera or phone (take photos as you disassemble so you know how it goes back together)
  • Small container for parts

Step-by-Step Cleaning

Step 1: Remove the Carburetor

  1. Shut off the fuel valve (if equipped) or clamp the fuel line
  2. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor inlet
  3. Remove the air filter housing and any linkages connected to the carburetor (throttle, choke)
  4. Take photos of all linkages before disconnecting them
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and lift the carburetor off the engine

Step 2: Disassemble the Carburetor

  1. Remove the float bowl — usually 4 screws on the bottom. Catch any fuel in a container.
  2. Remove the float and needle valve — the float pivots on a pin. Remove the pin and lift out the float and needle.
  3. Remove the main jet — usually a brass screw in the center of the carburetor. This is the most common location for varnish buildup.
  4. Remove the idle jet and emulsion tube if accessible (varies by carburetor type)
  5. Do not remove the throttle plate or choke plate unless absolutely necessary — they're tricky to reassemble correctly

Step 3: Clean Everything

  1. Spray carburetor cleaner through every passage and jet. You should see the cleaner come out the other side of each passage. If it doesn't, the passage is clogged.
  2. Use compressed air to blow out each passage after spraying. This dislodges stubborn varnish.
  3. Soak stubborn parts in carburetor cleaner for 15–30 minutes if spray alone doesn't work.
  4. Clean the float bowl — scrape any sediment or varnish from the bottom.
  5. Inspect the needle valve and seat — if the needle is grooved or the seat is pitted, replace them or the carburetor will flood.

Step 4: Reassemble

  1. Reinstall the main jet, idle jet, and emulsion tube.
  2. Reinstall the float and needle valve. Check that the float moves freely and the needle seats properly.
  3. Reinstall the float bowl with a new gasket if the old one is damaged.
  4. Reinstall the carburetor on the engine, reconnect all linkages (use your photos), and reconnect the fuel line.

Step 5: Test

  1. Open the fuel valve and check for leaks.
  2. Prime the carburetor (if equipped) and start the engine.
  3. Let it run for 2–3 minutes and check for smooth idle and full throttle operation.
  4. Check for leaks around the float bowl gasket and fuel inlet.

If It Still Doesn't Run Right

If cleaning doesn't fix the problem:

  • You missed a passage — disassemble and clean again, focusing on the main jet and idle circuit
  • The carburetor has a worn throttle shaft — air leaks past the shaft, causing a lean mixture. Replace the carburetor.
  • The problem isn't the carburetor — check the spark plug, fuel filter, and compression.

Preventing Future Carburetor Problems

The best fix is prevention:

  • Use fuel stabilizer any time the engine will sit for more than 30 days
  • Run the carburetor dry before storage by running the engine until it stops
  • Use non-ethanol fuel if available in your area — it stores longer and doesn't attract water
  • Replace the fuel filter annually — a clogged filter starves the carburetor
