A dead battery is the most common reason a riding mower won't start in the spring. The battery sits all winter, slowly discharges, and by the time you need to mow, it's too weak to crank the engine. Here's how to maintain your riding mower battery so it's always ready to go.
Why Riding Mower Batteries Die
Riding mower batteries (typically 12V, 12Ah or 24Ah) fail for three reasons:
- Sulfation — when a battery sits discharged, lead sulfate crystals form on the plates. Left too long, the crystals harden and the battery can't hold a charge.
- Parasitic drain — even when the key is off, small electronics (fuel gauges, hour meters, clocks) slowly drain the battery.
- Freezing — a discharged battery's electrolyte is mostly water. It freezes, expands, and cracks the battery case.
A fully charged battery won't freeze until about -75°F. A discharged battery can freeze at 20°F.
Battery Maintenance Schedule
During Mowing Season
Check the charge monthly. Use a multimeter to check the battery voltage. A fully charged 12V battery should read 12.6V or higher. If it reads below 12.4V, charge it.
Keep the terminals clean. Corrosion on the battery terminals prevents the alternator from charging the battery and prevents the starter from drawing full power. Clean the terminals with a wire brush and apply a thin coat of dielectric grease or petroleum jelly to prevent future corrosion.
Don't make short trips. The alternator needs 20–30 minutes of running to recharge the battery after starting. If you only run the mower for 10 minutes at a time, the battery slowly drains.
Before Winter Storage
1. Fully charge the battery. A fully charged battery resists freezing and sulfation. Charge it to 12.6V or higher before storing.
2. Disconnect the battery. Remove the negative cable first, then the positive. This eliminates parasitic drain during storage.
3. Store the battery indoors. Remove the battery from the mower and store it in a cool, dry place (a basement or utility room, not a freezing garage). A battery stored at 40°F lasts longer than one stored at 80°F, but a battery stored below freezing degrades faster.
4. Use a battery maintainer. A trickle charger or battery maintainer (like a Battery Tender) keeps the battery at full charge without overcharging. This is the single best thing you can do to extend battery life. Connect it and forget it until spring.
Spring Start-Up
1. Check the voltage. If the battery reads below 12.0V, it may not start the engine. Charge it before attempting to start.
2. Clean the terminals. Even if they look clean, give them a quick brush before reconnecting.
3. Reconnect the battery. Positive cable first, then negative.
4. Test the charging system. After the engine starts, check the battery voltage with the engine running. It should read 13.5–14.5V. If it reads the same as when the engine is off (12.6V), the charging system isn't working and the battery will die again.
How to Test a Riding Mower Battery
Voltage Test (Multimeter)
- 12.6V+ — Fully charged, good condition
- 12.4–12.5V — 75% charged, charge before use
- 12.0–12.3V — 25–50% charged, needs charging
- Below 12.0V — Discharged, may be sulfated
Load Test
A voltage test tells you the charge level, but not the battery's ability to deliver current. A battery can read 12.6V but fail under load. If the engine cranks slowly or the lights dim significantly when you try to start, the battery is weak even if the voltage reads fine.
A battery load tester (about $20) applies a load and measures how the battery holds up. Most auto parts stores will load-test your battery for free.
When to Replace a Riding Mower Battery
Replace the battery when:
- It won't hold a charge above 12.4V even after charging overnight
- It fails a load test
- It's more than 3–4 years old (typical lifespan)
- The case is swollen, cracked, or leaking
Choosing a Replacement Battery
Most riding mowers use a Group U1 battery (12V, 12V, 12Ah or higher). Check your owner's manual or the label on the old battery for the correct group size and terminal orientation (terminals can be on the top or side, and the positive/negative positions vary).
A higher Ah rating means longer cranking time — useful for cold mornings or hard-to-start engines.
