The Winter Idle Problem
I’ve spent the better part of two decades in my shop, and every spring, like clockwork, the phone starts ringing off the hook. Homeowners call me in a panic because a storm is approaching or they just want to test their gear, and their trusty portable generator won't turn over. After twenty years of pulling cords and turning wrenches, I can tell you that the culprit is almost never a catastrophic engine failure. It is usually just the aftermath of winter neglect.

The Culprit: Stale Fuel and Varnish
The number one reason portable generators fail to start after sitting for months is fuel degradation. Modern gasoline contains ethanol, which is essentially an alcohol-based additive. It is hygroscopic, meaning it loves to soak up moisture from the air. When your generator sits in an unheated garage or shed through the freeze-thaw cycles of winter, that ethanol pulls humidity from the air, turning your fuel into a watery, gummy mess. Over time, this fuel breaks down into a substance we call 'varnish' that clogs the tiny passages inside your carburetor.
How to Check Your Fuel System
First, drain the old gas. Don’t just try to burn through it by adding new gas on top. If the fuel smells sour or like varnish, it is useless. Use a siphon or open the drain bolt on the bottom of the carburetor bowl to empty the system completely. Once it is dry, add fresh, high-quality fuel. If you have a fuel shut-off valve, make sure it is in the 'on' position. If the unit still won't start after fresh fuel, you likely have a gummed-up carburetor.

Spark Plug Troubles
If you have fresh fuel and the engine still won't kick over, your spark plug might be the issue. Sometimes carbon deposits build up on the electrode, or the plug simply gets fouled due to poor combustion during the last run of the season. To check this, pull the spark plug wire off, remove the plug with a socket wrench, and look at the tip. Is it black, oily, or wet? If it looks crusty or damaged, just replace it. They are inexpensive and arguably the most important maintenance item on the machine.
Airflow Restrictions
Engines need to breathe. If your generator was stored in a shed, mice or insects might have decided the air intake was a perfect place to build a nest. I’ve found everything from mud dauber nests to acorns stuffed inside air boxes. Remove the air filter cover and check the filter itself. If it is foam, you can wash it with soap and water, let it dry, and apply a tiny amount of clean engine oil. If it is paper, check for debris. If it looks clogged or brittle, replace it immediately.
The 'Start Fluid' Diagnostic Test
If you have fuel, air, and spark but still nothing happens, you can perform a quick diagnostic test with starting fluid. Spray a one-second burst directly into the air intake (with the filter removed). If the engine 'pops' or tries to start for a second, you know you have spark and compression, but your carburetor is definitely clogged. If it doesn't even attempt to fire, your issue is likely electrical, like a safety shut-off switch, a faulty oil sensor, or a dead ignition module.
Safety First: When working with starting fluid or cleaning carburetors, always work in a well-ventilated area, wear safety glasses, and ensure there are no open flames or cigarettes nearby. Fuel vapors are highly flammable.
When to Call a Professional
There is a fine line between a DIY fix and a repair that requires a shop. If you’ve cleaned the carburetor, replaced the plug, and checked the air intake, but the engine still won't run, you might be dealing with a stuck needle valve, a damaged ignition coil, or a compression issue. At that point, you’re looking at internal engine components that require specialized tools like a torque wrench or a flywheel puller. If you aren't comfortable disassembling the engine block or the fuel system further, bring it into a shop. Don't force anything; you don't want to turn a simple carburetor cleaning into a blown engine repair.
Preventative Maintenance for Next Season
To ensure your generator starts on the first pull next spring, change your oil before you put it away for the season. Used oil contains acidic combustion byproducts that can etch the internal surfaces of your engine while it sits idle. Run the carburetor dry by shutting off the fuel valve while the engine is running until it quits. If you follow these two steps, you will be miles ahead of the average homeowner, and you won't need to call me for a spring repair.
