When the oil breaks down or water freezes inside the brass or aluminum housing, the internal components fail almost instantly. Understanding the Pump: The Silent Workhorse

Unlike the engine, which just provides the rotation, the pump is what actually does the work. Most residential washers use axial cam pumps, which are lubricated internally. Some are sealed for life, but many others require regular maintenance. The biggest enemy your pump faces is friction, followed closely by cold weather. Over time, the oil inside the pump collects tiny metal shavings from the pistons and seals, turning into a thin, ineffective slurry. If you don't swap that out, you're essentially running your pump on liquid sandpaper.

Knowing When to Change the Oil

Check your owner's manual for the specific interval, but as a general rule of thumb, I recommend changing the pump oil after the first 50 hours of use and then once every season. If you use your machine weekly, change it every 100 hours. If you aren't sure when it was last changed, just do it today. It takes ten minutes and costs a few dollars, compared to the hundreds it takes to replace the pump unit.

How to Perform a Pump Oil Change

First, locate the drain plug. On many units, this is a small bolt at the bottom of the pump body. Place a catch pan underneath, remove the plug, and let it drain completely. You might need to tilt the unit slightly to ensure every drop of old, dirty oil comes out. Once drained, replace the plug, ensuring you don't over-tighten it—aluminum threads are easy to strip. Fill the pump with the manufacturer-recommended oil. Don't substitute automotive motor oil here; you need the specific viscosity and additives designed for these high-pressure hydraulic components.

Pro Tip: Always use a funnel when refilling pump oil; even a tiny amount of dirt or debris entering the pump housing can destroy the internal seals and check valves during your next operation.

The Critical Importance of Winterizing

If you live in a climate where the temperature drops below freezing, you have to winterize. I cannot tell you how many pumps I replace in the spring because someone left water in the housing during a hard freeze. Water expands when it turns into ice. If that water is trapped inside your pump, it will crack the brass or aluminum casing from the inside out. Once that housing is cracked, the pump is effectively totaled.

The Step-by-Step Winterization Process

  1. Disconnect all hoses and accessories.
  2. Use a pump saver fluid. This is a special anti-freeze solution designed for pressure washer pumps. It also contains lubricants to keep the seals from drying out and cracking while the machine is in storage.
  3. Attach the bottle of pump saver to the water inlet and squeeze it until you see the fluid coming out of the water outlet.
  4. Rotate the engine shaft manually a few times to ensure the internal pistons are coated in the solution.
  5. Store the machine in a dry, covered area.

Safety First: Before performing any maintenance, disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent the engine from accidentally starting while your hands are near moving parts.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

One of the biggest mistakes I see is running the pump dry. Never pull the starter rope with the engine on without having the water supply fully connected and turned on. The water serves as a coolant for the internal seals. If you run it dry for even 30 seconds, you can overheat those seals and cause permanent damage. Another issue is using the wrong cleaning chemicals. Harsh, acidic, or bleach-based detergents can corrode the internal components if they are left sitting in the system. Always flush your system with clean water for two minutes after using soap.

When to Call in a Pro

If you notice persistent water leaking from the bottom of the pump, or if your machine is vibrating violently while in use, it might be time to bring it into the shop. These are often signs of worn-out high-pressure seals or a damaged wobble plate. If you aren't comfortable disassembling the pump, don't force it. These units are tightly packed with springs and o-rings that are difficult to reseat properly if you don't have the right tools. There is no shame in asking for help when you reach the limit of your DIY comfort zone. Taking care of the basics like oil changes and winterization will keep you running for years, but mechanical failure happens to the best of us.
